ASF in the NYC Marathon: Richard McClain

Six runners are representing and raising money for the Adaptive Sports Foundation by participating in the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 5. We had a Q & A with one of our runners, Richard McClain, that we would like to share with everyone! Please consider donating to Richard’s fundraising page by clicking here.
ASF: Hi Richard! How old were you when you first started running and what did you like most about it?

RM:I grew up playing sports from a young age, so running usually came in that way. What I like most about running is finishing!

ASF: What inspired you to pursue the NYC marathon and why did you choose to run for the ASF?

RM: Two main reasons: First, it’s an opportunity to raise money and awareness for the ASF, a program that has and continues to do so much for so many. Second, my sister Allison completed last year’s marathon. I was so inspired witnessing all of her intense and disciplined training and watching her cross the finish line on race day.

ASF: What’s your go-to running playlist/song?

RM: I enjoy listening to a mix of podcasts, classic rock and country music.

ASF: What’s the best meal or snack you like to eat after a long run?

RM: Steak!

ASF: Do you have a “running buddy?” If so, how do they impact your run?

RM: I do my training alone, but before and after each run I chat with Allison. I am following her training regimen so we like to compare notes and best practices.

ASF: Tell us about your training regimen. What did you do to prepare for the marathon?

RM: My sister’s training plan calls for incrementally increasing distances over an 18-week period. Typically Tuesdays and Wednesdays are short – medium runs, Fridays are long and Saturdays are on the shorter side.

ASF: What are you looking forward to the most on marathon race day?

RM: Not running again for a while!

ASF: What is your favorite thing to do in the city?

RM: I enjoy seeing all that NYC has to offer, but mostly visiting nearby family.

Good luck Richard, and thank you for fundraising and supporting the Adaptive Sports Foundation!
