Legacy and Leadership: CMSA 2019 Past Presidents’ Panel

BY ANNE LLEWELLYN, MS, BHSA, RN-BC, CCM
For the third year in a row, the past presidents of the Case Management Society of America participated in a general session during the annual conference. The session for 2019 was titled “Legacy and Leadership: CMSA 2019 Presidents’ Panel.” The concept of bringing the past presidents together is to tap into the individual expertise each of the past leadership of CMSA had to share with the attendees of the conference. Most of the past presidents are in active practice and use the expertise they have gained as industry leaders to advance the practice of case management across the broad healthcare continuum.
Many of the past presidents sit on boards, are consultants to hospital and managed care upper management and take the time to mentor those in practice as well as those new to the practice. In other words, all of the past presidents of CMSA are ambassadors to the Case Management Society of America and professionals who make up the practice across the care continuum. This year’s panel included the following participants:

Dr. Jose Alejandro, President, PhD, RN-BC, CCM, FACHE, FAAN, President: 2018-2020
Melanie Prince, RN, MSN, RN-BC, CCM, President Elect 2019-2020
Nancy Skinner, RN-BC, CCM, ACM-RN, CMCN, President: 1998-1999 and 2012-2014
Anne Llewellyn, MS, BHSA, RN-C, CCM, CRRN, President: 2003-2004
Connie Commander, RN-BC, MBA, CCM, ABDA, CPUR, President: 2006-2007
Jeff Frater, RN, BSN, President: 2008-2009
Margaret “Peggy” Leonard, MS, RN-BC, FNP, President: 2009-2010
Mary Beth Newman, MSN, RN-BC, CCP, CCM, CHCQM, President: 2011-2012
Kathleen Fraser, MSN, MHA, FAAN, RN-BC, CCM, CRRN, President: 2014-2016; current Executive Director
Dr. Mary McLaughlin Davis, DNP, ACNS-BC, NEA-BC, CCM, President: 2016-2018

In preparation for the panel discussion, several meetings were held with the past presidents who were planning to attend the annual conference. We talked about trends, opportunities and threats the current practice faces. To ensure the conversation flowed, the incoming president, Melanie Prince, and current president, Dr. Jose Alejandro, wrote several questions that could be used to kick off the panel and keep the conversation going. As it turned out, only one question was asked by the moderators. The rest of the time was spent on answering a variety of questions from the audience that focused on recruitment, retention, career ladders, how to utilize your seat at the table efficiently and other topics too numerous to mention in this article.
It was a dynamic discussion which yielded information that all could take back to their settings. In writing this article, I took the time to listen to the panel discussion, which is archived in the CMSA Education Library. The questions were high level, and the answers from the various past presidents were thoughtful and inspiring.
Also, it was moving to listen to Margaret (Peggy) Leonard, who recently passed away. Her comments were spot on!

As a result of the broad questions raised, it was decided to invite members and readers of CMSA Today to send in questions that you have about the practice of case management: the challenges you face, the opportunities and threats you are seeing in your practice. These questions will be sent out to the past presidents, and answers will be published in a future issue of CMSA Today, Past Presidents Corner. Please send your questions into Anne Llewellyn via email at allewellyn48@gmail.com.
